GAME OVER! A Vegan's Guide To Practical Veganism

Writer: Lauren-Marie KennedyLauren-Marie Kennedy

So, you attended my degree show, but are already vegan, so you Levelled Up already - amazing! Here's a blog post with some suggestions on how we can be better vegans within a slow-changing society.

Volunteer at a local animal sanctuary, it's a great way to meet fellow vegans and interact with the beautiful creatures who have been rescued. I should warn you - it's not a very glamourous gig, but it's a fabulous way to pay it forward and feels very rewarding. Activism! If you want to campaign for animal liberation, I would consider doing a simple social media/Google search for local activist groups you could join. Here are some groups which I've personally worked with:

Gentle Activism! (for introverted vegans) Of course, not everyone will feel confident to step out and protest on the streets but that doesn't mean that you can't partake in other activist acts such as:

  • Online Activism - signing and sharing petitions online is still a completely valid and necessary way of fighting for change and is far reaching

  • Start/join a reading group

  • Creative Activism - make banners/posters for protest groups

  • Silent Activism - collect stickers/badges and other merch which promote your cause without you needing to say a word

  • Support exclusively vegan small businesses (from restaurants to Etsy stores)

  • Donate! Money, food, supplies, or your time

Do Not Compromise on your Morals I learned this the hard way, by being in situations which made me feel super uncomfortable to avoid being 'difficult'. Fortunately, when I started voicing my boundaries (such as not wanting to be around non-vegan food) to friends/family, they were super supportive. This is sadly not everyone's experience but I'd nonetheless encourage you to have the difficult conversations and be true to your values. You might feel empowered and hopefully heard and seen by those closest to you. Join a Society! If you're a University of Dundee student, why not join the Vegan Society? I personally formed this society back in 2022 with a couple of friends and intended for it to be a place for like-minded people to meet. It is now run by a small group of dedicated and passionate vegan student volunteers. There is also an international Vegan Society, which anyone can become a member of - student or not. Stay 'Veg'-ucated! Being better educated on vegan issues makes us all better versed, so keep up to date as much as you can. LMK
